In cleaning, finishing and dyeing, the use of phosphates fulfills a number of unique functions. In combination with soaps or with synthetic detergents, they exhibit synergistic effects on detergency and improve their penetrating, wetting, emulsifying and dispersing properties.
Both the orthophosphate and the polyphosphate species are functional in textile processing. Trisodium phosphate (TSP) is used as a source of alkalinity in fiber-reactive dyeing processes for both cotton and cotton blends. Its use makes the dyeing process less sensitive to pH swings that might otherwise occur. This can lead to increases in the production rates in dyeing processes. Trisodium phosphate (TSP) and trisodium phosphate crystalline (TSPC) are also used in scour formulations, particularly for synthetic yarns. TSPC is also used in peroxide bleaching, where it acts as a buffer at high pH levels.
The monosodium and disodium phosphates are also used in textile processing. Monosodium phosphate (MSP) is used in textile manufacturing, where it acts as a low pH buffer for acid dyeing of textile fibers. Disodium phosphate (DSP) is useful as a mild alkali buffer for bleaching and dying fabrics that are sensitive to high pH levels.
ICL polyphosphates perform various functions within the textile processing plant. Much of their functionality in this area is similar to that in detergent applications. Finished textile goods, especially those made into wearing apparel, undergo periodic processing to recondition them throughout their life. Laundering is similar in many ways to the treatments performed during goods preparation, especially to scouring.
In fabric preparation for dyeing, less streaking and spotting is observed for fabrics scoured with sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). This is especially apparent in dark fiber-reactive dyes that can have problems with uniform shading. STPP has been shown to be an effective scour booster and can be used to increase the quality of fabric preparation.
