Mining

Small amounts of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) can greatly improve the overall efficiency and economics of the froth flotation process for copper ore beneficiation. Increased copper recovery due to improved behavior has been noted (i.e., finer grind) at a given feed rate of solids to the unit, followed by an improved copper recovery. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) or sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) all have utility as deflocculants in grinding, classification and separation processes. They can be used to advantage in most aqueous systems resulting in more efficient operations, often at reduced costs.

In the mining of clay fields, ICL polyphosphates are used to provide dispersion functionality to high-solids slurries of kaolin-type clay. These slurries are often pumped over long distances to secondary operations in the manufacturing process. The use of small amounts of polyphosphates can provide low viscosity to an otherwise viscous slurry.
