Polyphosphoric acid (PPA)

Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) is a proven modifier that improves the properties of asphalt binder. It has been used successfully for over 40 years and is now broadly used, either as a stand-alone modifier or in combination with various polymers. The benefits of PPA are demonstrated in conventional and Superpave™ testing procedures, as well as in the new Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) tests.

ICL Phosphate Specialties offers PPA in a variety of concentrations. Most widely used are 105 and 115%. Both perform similarly, with 105% providing a lower viscosity option, and 115% a more concentrated and more viscous versions. Which is chosen depends on the customer’s preferences and plant design.
